Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono

Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono

Tuesday, January 17 @ 7:30PMTue, Jan 17 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono are two legends of Hawaiian music. Each became an icon in the 1970s, both at the creative forefront as Hawaiian music reinvented itself. They have continued to lead the way for over 4 decades.

Despite their common history, Keola & Henry only performed together for the first time in 2014, when Henry invited Keola & Moana Beamer to be part of Back in the Day performances. This successful annual show featured Hawai‛i’s musical greats who shaped Hawaiian music from the ‘70s forward, as part of the “Hawaiian Renaissance” — the seminal movement in Hawai‛i’s cultural history that brought language, music, hula, art, and all aspects of Hawaiian culture back to their central place in the life of the Islands.

Touring together, Keola & Henry with Keola’s wife Moana performing hula, have been greeted by wildly enthusiastic audiences, celebrating their original songs that have become beloved contemporary Hawaiian classics.Share the spirit of the Islands with these Legends!

The Silos “35th Anniversary Cuba album show”

The Silos “35th Anniversary Cuba album show”

Friday, January 13 @ 7:30PMFri, Jan 13 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

The Silos, the still-kicking band Walter Salas-Humara co-founded in New York’s post-punk ‘80s scene played Alt-Rock, Alt-Country, and Americana before any critics coined those terms. They were named Best New Artist in the 1987 Rolling Stone Critics Poll. Throughout Salas-Humara’s career his voice has remained textured like a walnut; meanwhile, his narratives focus not on interior, abstract weaves of doubts and anxieties but on storytelling. He renders small incidents in granular detail that take on the weight of attentive, convincing poetry and wry wordplay. Each tune is marked by such humanity, which offers much refuge in a convulsive time.

Slaughter Beach, Dog w/ Mo Troper

Slaughter Beach, Dog w/ Mo Troper

Wednesday, January 11 @ 7:30PMWed, Jan 11 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

At the Moonbase, the fourth full-length album from Slaughter Beach, Dog, is a return to form for Philadelphia bandleader Jake Ewald. Written and recorded alone at home and at The Metal Shop, Ewald’s East Kensington recording studio, the album tracks an exercise in solitary production not unlike Slaughter Beach, Dog’s 2016 debut Welcome or 2017’s Motorcycle.JPG. On the heels of 2019’s Safe and Also No Fear, Ewald’s latest offering brings expanded arrangements and sharpened storytelling as he conjures salad days over slacker rock (“Do You Understand”), dark grooves of seedy city life (“Song for Oscars”), and even a barroom-piano-driven “escapade through the great American bedroom” (“A Modern Lay”). At the Moonbase arrives December 24th on Lame-O Records.

Deb Talan (of the Weepies)

Thursday, January 5 @ 7:30PMThu, Jan 5 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Granted, her style has changed a bit since writing the forever-unknown smash-hit “Through the Window” about feeling numb, like life was going on somewhere out there but not accessible to her (at 14. so jaded.) She played clarinet, wrote songs on piano, later taught herself to play guitar in college, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin, was a vegetarian for 4 years, ended that with a hot dog and a swim in Lake Michigan, started a band in Portland, Oregon with her friend Mark, named it Hummingfish, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way.
